How does the USFDA classify Spirulina ?
According to the USFDA, “Spirulina, a blue-green microalgae, is a source of proteins and contains various vitamins and minerals. It may be legally marketed as a food or food supplement, so long as it is lableled accurately and contains no contaminated or adulterated substances.” (FDA Talk Paper No 41, 160, June 23, 1981.) Spirulina has also been designated as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS), for use as an ingredient, per GRAS Notice NO. GRN 000101, by the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, Office of Food Safety.
