How does the UroVysion Kit work?

0

In the UroVysion Kit, microscope slides are prepared using cells from voided urine according to standard cytological laboratory procedures. A mixture of four, different-colored fluorescent DNA probes is then applied to the slide, allowed to hybridize, and viewed with a microscope. Analysis of the specimen is performed in a manner similar to that used by cytologists for PAP stained slides. Briefly, the specimen slide is qualitatively scanned in a rapid manner for identification of cell nuclei suspicious (abnormal-appearing) for malignancy. The suspicious cells are then verified as malignant by objectively counting the DNA probe signals. If no nuclei appear abnormal during the scanning process, a random sample of cells is examined and the probe signals counted to determine whether chromosome abnormalities exist in the absence of morphological changes. If abnormalities exist in either case, cancer is likely present.
