You can buy “upgrades” from the Castle Workshop in each town. After an upgrade is purchased it will need to be researched, and when the research is complete your town’s units will improve. Your town can also only research one upgrade at a time, but you can queue up as many as you like. Upgrades become more expensive however and take longer to be researched.
