How does the UNODC operate within drug policy?
There are basically three pillars to the UNODC. There is the normative aspect, as expressed in the three conventions and policy decision-making. UNODC is also involved with data collection and analysis – we publish yearly updates on trends in drugs that involve qualitative research and also by providing technical cooperation, assistance to member states for the purposes of helping them reduce the drug problem. Do Drugs and crime go together? Certain aspects do have strong links – drug trafficking, money laundering and corruption for example go hand in hand. In terms of drug abuse prevention however, these aspects are less intertwined: Preventing drug abuse does not necessarily involve preventing drug-related crime.
