The operator does not differentiate between the score of the original search term and the substituted terms that are returned. If, for example, document A contains only the word “term1” and document B contains only the word “tera1”, searching for term1 results in the same score for both documents. When documents are returned with the same score, a secondary sorting is performed, based on the collection’s DOCID field. For example, if document A (DOCID=6) and document B (DOCID=2) both return the same score, document B appears first in the results list. If you want to incorporate relevancy ranking into the results of a typo search, you can add the operator to the query, as in term1. If you want to score documents that contain the exact query term higher than documents that do not contain it, you can use a query similar to this: [.90] (term1) [.
