How does the turbine change speed? Does the turbine brake and come to a stop before changing?

The turbine does not stop to change speed — instead it does a “running change”. At the cutover speed, there is a brief period of continuous speed-change from low-speed to high-speed (or vice-versa). I don’t know the exact length of this time period, but accelerations will be gentle enough so that students don’t need to consider inertial torques. Of course, at no time is there any variation in gearbox ratio (i.e. input speed to output speed). This is not a variable ratio gearbox, or a multi-ratio gearbox (like in a car).
