How Does the Transport Layer of the OSI Model Work?
The Transport Layer is the fourth layer in the 7 layer Open System Interconnection (OSI) model and essentially deals with end to end connections and reliability. The Transport Layer facilitates transparent transfer of data between end users; providing reliable data transfer services to the upper layers in the OSI Model. The Transport Layer controls the reliability of a link though segmentation and de-segmentation, flow control and error control. Typical examples of Layer 4, although non conformist, are the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the User Datagram Protocol (UDP).
