How does the Toronto club scene compare to other major cities like NYC and L.A.?
Well, Toronto has the glass ceiling of being in Canada. Most of the big acts that have come out of Toronto’s dance music scene such as Deadmaus5, Crystal Castles, Mstrkrft, Thunderheist etc., they have really attained a good chunk of their success from working outside Canada. Mind you, Canada will always have their back and vice versa, but it’s almost impossible to achieve international success through working primarily in Canada. Whereas in NYC and L.A., this is entirely possible because the States rule the entertainment industry. So that makes Toronto a platform for a lot of people, rather than “the place they are going to make it.” I find the social climbing much more rampant in Toronto than a lot of other major cities because everyone is treating each other as simple commodities to get to the top and while that certainly happens in every city to some degree, I feel like in Toronto everyone wants to be somebody and are a lot less discreet about it.
