How does the text-to-speech feature work?
Text-to-speech varies somewhat by manufacturer, but most devices use a computer-generated voice that sounds surprisingly like a real, live person. Most manufacturers offer several voice choices on the unit, with even more available to purchase online as downloads. When you activate the text-to-speech feature, the voice speaks the same information that is provided on the screen. It tells you how far away your next turn or point of action will be and then reminds you via voice or a notification noise when you are just before your turn or other point of action. Some devices even offer different notification noises for left and right turns. And remember, if you don’t like the text-to-speech feature, you can always turn it off.
