How does the system discriminate between a leak caused by a rupture versus a leak caused by the opening of valves?

It all depends on the valve configuration. If the leak is discharging outward, then the ALDS will not be able to tell the difference between a regular operating valve and a true leak. As the matter of fact, this is the way we demonstrate the leak detection and location functions of the ALDS during the commissioning process—i.e., by opening a valve to the outside, and checking the capability of ALDS detecting and locating this leak. However, as long as we know the location of this valve (usually the user knows where their valve is), ALDS can either just simply exclude any leak declaration at this location (consider them as NORMAL operation) whenever ALDS locates a leak at this spot, or install a sensor right next to the valve and exclude the leak declaration by hardware (by the sensor). If the valve is internal (controlling flow within the pipeline), it is very easy to distinguish the leak from valve operation because the signal patterns of valve operation will be different between up
