The stomach helps to break down food by mechanical and chemical means. The stomach churns the food and also chemically breaks food substances down into small particles so that it may be absorbed into the rest of the body. The contents are very acidic so that it may break the food down and for killing microorganisms that come in with the food. Chyme is the material that leaves the stomach and is very pasty.
