How does the sherlock holmes stories reflect the values of their time?
The first thing to note is that the Sherlock Holmes stories are very english, as stated in the stories everything english is good but everything foreign is bad. This was because Victorian society saw itself superior to everyone else. Anyone who did not live in england, or most especially London was looked upon with suspicion. Look at the stories, the major villain is Moriarty an irish name, there are foreign poisons used, dark people doing dark deeds and only the dashing holmes could help them. the belief that england was helping people from and they saw themselves as the benevolent empire. Women are seen as dangerous, there were spies everywhere but through it all the EMPIRE survives.
