How Does the Scheme Operate?
Student tutors are in school for one morning or afternoon per week on a voluntary basis for a period of approximately 14 weeks. The students are selected by the Universities and Colleges and matched to placements according to their preference for primary or secondary schools and in accordance with the subjects they are studying. The classroom teacher chooses to have a tutor with a particular cohort of pupils. Some thought should be given to the nature of the work that the pupils will be doing at the time when the tutor is present in the classroom. It is important that the pupils are working with their own classroom teacher at this time and that there will be the opportunity for the tutor to help the students either in small groups or individually. The classroom teacher passes the information about the placement ie the time, the subject and age group to the Link Teacher in each school.
