How Does The Router Bandwidth Monitor Work?
PRTG Network Monitor allows you to monitor all the connections into the router and lets you discern how much bandwidth each connection is using. The router bandwidth monitor uses the following methods to analyze network bandwidth • SNMP monitoring is the basic method of gathering network bandwidth and network usage data. It works with with SNMP enabled devices, such as managed switches, routers and firewalls. • Packet Sniffing: With its built-in IP packet sniffer PRTG can inspect all network data packets travelling in your LAN or WLAN to calculate the bandwidth usage. • NetFlow: The NetFlow protocol is supported by most Cisco routers to measure network bandwidth usage. It is the most powerful of the three methods, suitable for high traffic networks.
