How does the post office work?
It really is an amazing process. First off, the post office employs around 800,000 employees in the US, so plenty of people are working 24/7 to move the mail. But to insure accuracy and increase speed, high tech bar code sequencing technology is used. The mail is run through machines and at first is sorted by certain zones (states, general areas, ect). Once a general destination is found, the mail is moved by truck closer to the area of delivery. At this point, the mail is once again run through a machine that actually puts the mail into sequence as the carrier will deliver it. In the old days, workers had to sort the mail manually piece by piece. Now this technology sorts the mail EXACTLY how the carrier will walk his route. This saves much time & money.
