How does the policy change impact the CMNs?
For the present time, the DMERCs will continue to use the existing CMNs for Manual Wheelchairs (CMS 844), Motorized Wheelchairs (CMS 843) and Power Operated Vehicles (CMS 850) to facilitate claim adjudication. For dates of service on or after May 5, 2005, follow these instructions: Requirements for CMNs Dates of Service on or after May 5, 2005 Manual Wheelchair: • The physician should answer Question 1 as if it reads, Does the patient require the use of a wheelchair to accomplish mobility related ADLs in the home? • Questions 2 and 5 must be answered if the doctor orders a reclining back. • Question 3 must be answered if the doctor orders an elevating legrest. • Questions 4 and 5 must be answered if the doctor orders an adjustable height armrest. • Questions 5, 8 and 9 must be answered if the doctor orders any type of lightweight manual wheelchair.
