How does the plating compare with steel?
Steel boat constructors use a heavy base plate: • For ballast • Because they are flat bottomed and the edges wear away and it is going to go rusty and pit, they figure that the thicker it is the longer it will last. As most steel boats are wet bilged it is being attacked from both sides. • At some stage it will need re-plating and the thicker the material that is left the easier the repair will be. • They rely on the heavy plate for structural strength.
