How does the NIM impact on frontline staff?
It is often said that frontline officers are so busy attending calls that they have no time to consider the NIM. Whilst this will be the case in certain instances in certain areas or, indeed, for a number of consecutive shifts in a number of areas, it seems unlikely that on every shift every operational officer will never have the opportunity to devote some time to an identified area or problem. The key clearly lies with supervisors at sergeant and inspector level to identify opportunities for directing efforts in accordance with divisional or force priorities. There will always be officers who have enthusiasm or an interest for areas not within current force or divisional priorities. This should be managed carefully so as not to demotivate such officers. However, officers also have a professional responsibility to recognise and work towards divisional and force goals which should be reflective of community concerns.
