How does the Next Generation Internet tie in?
The NGI effort is a White House initiative outlined by Pres. Clinton in his 1997 State of the Union address. Like Internet2, it proposes to accelerate the development and deployment of advanced networking techniques. Rather than applying to just educational institutions, however, it will also encompass major federal agencies. The objectives of this federal initiative are: • Connect 100 universities and/or national labs at speeds 100 times faster than the Internet; connect a few at speeds 1000 times faster • Serve as a testbed for next-generation network technology, so that future networks can accommodate 100 times as many users, real time interactions, etc. • Demonstrate how advanced networks will enable a new generation of scientific research, national security, distance education, environmental monitoring, and health care.
