How does the Newborns and Mothers Health Protection Act of 1996 (NMHPA) affect employer-offered health care benefits?

NMHPA affects the amount of time a covered mother and child are covered for a hospital stay immediately following childbirth. Group health plans that are subject to the Newborns’ Act cannot restrict this type of hospital stay to less than 48 hours after a vaginal delivery or 96 hours after a cesarean delivery.
