Demeter goddess of crops and harvest. Her daughter Persephone was abducted by Hades. Demeter went looking for her, mourning her loss. Demeter forgot to mind the growth, nothing grew (winter). A compromise was reached – Persephone was allowed to rejoin her mother for half the year (=growth period).
