How Does the Montgomery GI Bill Work?
Eligibility In order to be eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill, veterans must hold a high school diploma or equivalent. They must also have been honorably discharged from service. Additionally, veterans must fit into one of four categories. Category One is designed for veterans who began active duty after June 30,1985. They must have had their service pay withheld by $100 per month, for twelve months. Category One veterans must have served for three years. Alternately, they may qualify by serving two years on active duty, followed by four years on Selected Reserve status. Category Two is for veterans who began serving before January 1, 1977. They must have been on duty at least one day between October 19, 1984, and June 30, 1985. They also must have remained on active status through June 30, 1988.
