How does the MAFterburner work?

Most engine control modules have multiple operating strategies that fall under two principle modes of operation. These are closed-loop and open-loop operating modes. When talking about air/fuel mixture control, closed-loop operation usually means that the mixture is regulated to some value by monitoring the feedback signal from the exhaust-gas oxygen, (H)EGO, sensors (as well as others).
