How does the luminaires “lifetime” compare to the LEDs lifetime?
Here’s a hint… it should be less since the LEDs are just part of a complete electronic system. You’ll also want them to be able to tell you what the LEDs ambient operating temp of the luminaire is in its intended environment. (This is just a quiz question to see if they understand what it takes to properly test and spec an LED luminaire). LEDs like cold, so what really matters is how hot a local environment the LEDs will be running in the hottest place it is designed for; outdoor sconces where I live in Texas can be expected to spend their days in 90+ degree temps for 4 months a year, for example. It’s only going to be hotter inside the luminaire’s enclosure. The good news is that the lights are typically only on at night, which eliminates the sun’s direct radiation factor, but having spent some years in Dallas, we awoke on more than one morning to find it hadn’t cooled much below 90 degrees over night.
