In addition to lower power consumption and weight, the most significant benefit of 1.8″ drives to mobile users is the improved shock resistance, both during operation and non-operational transport. The 1.8″ 30GB and 20GB HDDs deliver all storage gigabytes on a single disk platter, which rotates at 4200rpm, resulting in lower energy consumption in addition to quiet operation. (Note: The 60GB HDD is dual-platter.) To ensure high performance during data-intensive read and write cycles, the built-in controller also includes a 2MB data cache.
