How does the J-school admissions process work?
The number of students accepted each semester depends on the number of students already in the program and available resources. A faculty committee reviews all applications with the goal of admitting the most qualified students to the program. The primary criterion for admission to major status is overall academic performance. If you are an honors student with a 3.3 GPA or higher you have the best chance of becoming a major. However, we also have a number of seats that do not focus specifically on grade point. A faculty committee evaluates all applications with GPA’s of 2.50 to 3.29 looking for those students who have demonstrated a serious interest in the field of journalism. We consider the applicant’s statement of interest, demonstrated writing ability, prior journalistic experience such as high school journalism, internships or jobs in the field, participation in the J-School’s student organizations (which is not limited to major status), and performance in journalism courses.
