How does the insurance coverage work?

Normally, most student athletes are covered under one or more parents’ policy. If a student athlete is injured the parent’s insurance is primary and all medical bills must be submitted to that company. When the primary has paid its share of the bills, the remaining bill is forwarded to the University for submission under the athletic accident policy. This submission of the bill must be accompanied by an explanation of benefits from the primary insurance company. This is necessary for the claim to be processed. Students not having a primary policy can use the University policy as their primary provided the have been seen by the athletic training department for evaluation. In that case the medical bills will be submitted directly to the University’s insurance company with the proper claim forms.
