How does the incremental backup process work?
The original file is divided up into smaller blocks and the digital signature of each block is recorded. Whenever the file is modified the common blocks of data, which are shared with the original file, are first identified (using the digital signatures) and only the unaccountable data, i.e. new information, is compressed, encrypted and sent to the server for storage. This process makes no assumption about the type of data contained in the file. The timesavings achieved are more significant when working with larger files of several MBs or more.
