How does the idea of Jake Peavy pitching in St. Louis grab you?
Well, the All-Star righthander would apparently waive his no-trade clause to pitch here in 2009. Other teams on the 2007 Cy Young award winner’s list: Angels, Dodgers, Astros, Braves and Cubs. The Padres, coming off a 99-loss season, are exploring the possibility of a deal to expedite the club’s rebuilding process. Peavy is signed through 2013 and will earn a boatload of money. But, let’s dream for a little bit here. Peavy’s presence in the rotation with Adam Wainwright would make a tremendous 1-2 combo for the next several years. Plus, acquiring Peavy would address the pressing need to add another pitcher to the rotation, especially with the uncertainty of Chris Carpenter’s health. But, if Carpenter returns healthy, just imagine a rotation of Peavy, Wainwright, Carpenter, Kyle Lohse and Todd Wellemeyer. I take my chances. Before we get too excited, though, you have to wonder if the Cardinals have the right kind of players that would satisfy the demands of Padres GM Kevin Towers. Plus,
