How does the Highway work?
The NCIH is based on SONET (synchronous optical network) and ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) technology. SONET-ATM is the platform, or architecture, for the next generation of telecommunications products and services. The broadband network will consist of high-speed telecommunications switches located in telephone company central offices around the state connected by fiber links. Equipment, such as muxtiplexers, codecs, etc., will be located at sites on the network.
