The Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, 2006, works with the Greenbelt Plan. The Greenbelt Plan, which covers a portion of the Greater Golden Horseshoe, protects 1.8 million acres of farmland and greenspaces at the heart of the Greater Golden Horseshoe from becoming developed into urban areas. The Greenbelt Plan identifies the natural heritage, farmland and countryside that will be protected from further urban development and where agricultural and other rural uses will continue. The Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, 2006 provides policies for how and where urban development should best and most appropriately occur.
