How does the Green Christmas Tree program work?
This is a program where we offer four different species of trees that people can rent, essentially. They go to our lot [at City Hall], choose a tree, pick it up and bring it home — just like they would any other Christmas tree, but these are living. They can enjoy the tree and decorate it. They keep it watered and healthy. And in a few weeks, they put it on their doorstep and we’ll come pick it up and grow it into a larger tree that we’ll ultimately put on a street in San Francisco. But these trees don’t look like cone-shaped Christmas trees, right? These are not needled evergreens, they’re not your dense redwood, fir or pine trees. They’re canopy trees: Southern magnolias, a small-leaf Tristania, a strawberry tree and olive trees. It sounds like you have to love them no matter what they look like, like a Charlie Brown Christmas tree. Anyone considering this is aware that this [tree] won’t be the same. There is no confusion. It’s not a Charlie Brown Christmas tree type of feel; it’s a
