The “sterilization” of farm land (ie. estate holdings) is of concern to community leaders and farmers across the province. By having the land held in perpetuity for the farming community, and thereby Salt Spring Island residents, guarantees that farm land can remain in some form of meaningful productivity. Furthermore, the laudable goal of feeding the Island with less dependence on imported food will build a sustainable community. Opportunities for community garden plots will surface. Costly irrigation and related infrastructure is currently in place. Existing water rights would be transferred with title. With a significant amount of water storage immediately available, local fire fighters could fill pump trucks with ease.
