How does the Gray telescope compare with other telescopes on the market?
Gray & Company of Inverness is today the only maker of premium quality traditional three draw spotting telescopes: almost every other spotting telescope available on the market is a sealed unit, using prisms to reflect and magnify the viewed image. Gray telescopes use inline lenses meaning that the overall length is longer than competitors, making easier to hold steady, especially in a braced position. Other telescopes are both shorter and heavier that the Gray, with the result that it is almost impossible to balance, for use when held free in the hands, and requires a bulky, heavy tripod to be carried at all times. Moreover, for any cleaning and repair to be undertaken, such a telescope needs to be returned to the maker’s factory – not very handy when one is in the field or on a week-long trip.
