How does the Goodyear blimp compare to the Zeppelins?
The U.S. Navy’s ZPG-3W blimps (non-rigid airships) were 403 feet long, more than twice the length of the 192-foot-long Goodyear blimp that floated down in Waukegan last week. The behemoth German rigid airship, The Hindenberg, which blew up in 1937, was even bigger — 807 feet long (more than two city blocks) and 135 feet wide (taller than the Lake County Building). Zeppelins ranged from 400 to 800 feet long and cruised at 70-80 mph.
