How does the Global War on Terror (GWT) play out in Sudan?
• The post-9/11 world has made for strange bedfellows. The Government of Sudan is technically an ally of the US and West in waging the Global War on Terror (GWT). Once a proud hotbed of terrorist activity (Osama Bin Laden lived and trained jihadists in Sudan for many years), Sudan is now officially providing intelligence about suspected Islamic terrorists in their midst. • This situation mirrors that in Pakistan: Washington’s need to keep Islamabad on the right side of the GWT has often led it to turn a blind eye to the excesses of the Pakistani government. In accordance with the saying “the enemy of my enemy is my friend,” Khartoum, like Islamabad, has received special consideration not always offered to less strategic partners in the GWT.
