How does the Gas to Liquid process convert biomass to liquid fuel?
The basic Gas to Liquid (GTL) process involves two steps: gasification and catalytic conversion. In the gasification step, biomass is quickly heated in a closed system with limited oxygen – a carefully controlled combustion process to produce an energy-rich “synthesis gas” containing mostly carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H 2 ). This synthesis gas can then be catalytically converted either into energy fuels, including ethanol and synthetic diesel or other more valuable compounds.
