The Fleet Support Office employs the Ship maintenance (SHIPMAIN) program to improve fleet effectiveness. The program develops and shares best practices, streamlines maintenance planning, and improves performance in shipyards, depots, and Intermediate Maintenance Activities (IMA). SHIPMAIN minimizes the amount of downtime required for maintenance and ensures that ships remain deployable and ready to surge when needed. Maintenance teams for each ship consist of the ship’s port engineer, members of Ship Intermediate Maintenance Activities ( SIMA ), a ship repair supervisor, Fleet Training Support Center personnel, and the ship’s representative. Led by the ship’s representative, teams meet twice weekly to identify and prioritize jobs. By streamlining the administrative processing of ship repair work, SHIPMAIN improves the efficiency of Sailors and empowers them to make better maintenance decisions.
