How does the EU Passenger Rights legislation cover me if a flight is overbooked/cancelled/delayed?

The legislation – Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council – grants passengers on EU airlines certain rights when particular events affect your flight. It sets out the obligations and compensation rules that carriers have to abide by if you are denied boarding due to a flight being overbooked, if your flight is delayed & if your flight is cancelled. As long as you check-in on time, this legislation applies to: – Any flight (including charters) from any EU airport, operated by any airline; – Any flight (including charters) to any EU airport from outside the EU, when operated by an EU airline. * you don’t have to be an EU citizen to benefit from this legislation You can see an EU-issued leaflet on these rights here – the full legislation is located on the EU website, here. Please note that a more detailed explanation of these rules will be included in the next edition of the V-Book – this FAQ will be updated when this edition is released.
