How does the energy consumption of the new plant compare with a conventional plant and conventional desalination techniques?
Treating even slightly salty water requires more energy than treating freshwater – but there are no more sources of freshwater to boost supplies to London, and desalination uses less energy than the other possibilities – such as the importation of fresh water supplies by sea, or transferring water from other areas in the UK. Energy consumption at the plant is comparable to other desalination plants treating slightly salty river water – but less than half of plants treating seawater using filtration techniques, and around 15 per cent of the most energy-intensive thermal desalination plants.
