How does the educational program change at BMS from the Early Childhood Campus through the Middle School?
Over the years, mirroring what we know about neurodevelopmental changes, the program gradually and seamlessly moves from the concrete toward the abstract, often using the same materials in different ways as more subjects are introduced. Our curriculum is called a “spiral,” because the same concepts will be revisited again and again, in greater detail and complexity, throughout each three-year cycle and each level of the school. Our Middle School (grades 7-8) is not a formal Montessori program, in that the teachers are not Montessori-trained and don’t use Montessori materials. Its progressive, developmental approach and the close personal attention, though, make it philosophically compatible with the rest of our school.
