How does the education system respond to the varied cultural and ethnic heritage of Saskatchewan s people?
Saskatchewan’s people come from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Many Saskatchewan citizens want their culture and traditions to be an integral part of their lives and their children’s everyday experiences. As well, many parents (and older students) recognize the personal and economic value of knowing more than one language. In response, Saskatchewan’s education system offers a range of language courses and cultural programs. Ten language programs other than English and French are available for secondary/high school credit. The list includes Chinese, Cree, Dene, German, Japanese, Latin, Russian, Saulteaux, Spanish and Ukrainian. The number of students enrolled in Cree increased by 429 between 1989-90 and 1993-94. The number of students enrolled in German decreased by 54 and the number enrolled in Ukrainian decreased by 55 during the same time period. The overall number of students enrolled in language courses other than English and French has increased steadily sinc
