How does the duct testing and sealing process work?
The basic process first involves sealing the duct system at all registers and distribution plenums, pressurizing it with air and then measuring the air that is continuously lost; much like a balloon with a pin hole. Next, if the duct system pressure loss is measured in excess of 15% of its rated air moving capability, the duct system is sealed or repaired in all areas that can be accessed until a 15% leak rate can be established, or until all accessible areas are sealed. Finally, the leak rate and/or inaccessible areas are verified by an independent, State Certified Hers Rater, who provides a certificate of compliance that is required by the inspector in order to finalize the permit.
