How does the design of “My Life” promote good decision making?
In her doctoral research Dr. Sharon Williams identified three attitudes which underscore poor decision making. Each of these attitudes can be held by anyone, but they are particularly common in adolescents. Specifically, these attitudes are: 1) A belief that LUCK rather than EFFORT determines what happens to us in life. 2) A belief in “PERSONAL INVULNERABILITY”-i.e. “Nothing truly bad can happen to me”. 3) Basing life decisions only on the PRESENT and not considering the FUTURE. “My Life” has been structured to target each key attitude. The events, and issues included in “My Life” allow students to personally discover the advantages of the adaptive attitudinal positions favoring effort, awareness of personal vulnerability , and an appreciation of the impact today’s choices have for the future.
