How does the Crack Cave thing work?
Crack Cave is a cave in Picture Canyon. Twice a year, at the spring and autumnal equinox, the morning sun’s rays will penetrate the cave to illuminate some marks on the wall. This phenomenon only lasts 10-12 minutes and then disappears until the next equinox. The town of Springfield has a festival at this time and as a courtesy, the Forest Service opens Crack Cave for viewing of the phenomenon. Contact the Springfield office at 719-523-6591 for a schedule of openings.
