How does the copper IUD work?
Research suggests that once placed inside the uterus, an IUD: • prevents sperm from moving through the uterus and from fertilising ova (eggs) • prevents implantation of a fertilized ovum (egg) The IUD has no effects on the woman’s hormones or menstrual cycle. The device has two fine threads attached to the lower end so that when it is fitted, the threads protrude through the cervix (neck of the womb) into the vagina. This allows the woman to check that the device is still in place and enables easy removal by a doctor.
