How does the contributors skepticism regarding the Bible compare to their skepticism regarding other ancient texts and sources?
Our perspective regarding the reliability of the Bible is reasonably summarized by Stephen T. Davis, when he writes, “They [the contributors to TET] regard the Bible as no different in kind from any other ancient text.” Our goal is to treat the Bible no more and no less critically than we would treat any other text. There is a difference between the fact of the Bible’s existence and the propositions asserted by the Bible. If a proposition asserted by the Bible has a high degree of inherent plausibility, we may not require any independent confirmation of that proposition. If, on the other hand, a proposition is inherently implausible, we may require independent confirmation, of a strength that is inversely proportional to the degree of implausibility of the proposition. This is precisely the same method we would use for assessing the historicity of claims made in any other text.
