How does the consultation with Aboriginal communities work in SD#91?
The First Nations Education Council, SD#91 meets the first Wednesday of every month to discuss and make recommendations to the School Board regarding Aboriginal Education in SD#91. The council consists of those people representing their local First Nation or organization in areas of Aboriginal education. The terms of reference for the First Nations Education Council, SD#91, including mandate, goals and membership, is attached. Most areas within School District #91 have an Aboriginal Education sub-committee. They meet regularly in Fort St James, Vanderhoof and Burns Lake. Each consists of the Education Coordinator from each band and principals and Aboriginal staff of the local schools. Schools and Aboriginal communities in Fraser Lake and Fort Fraser and Southbank meet on a school-to-Nation as needed basis. The “sign-off” required by the schools and the First Nations community to indicate agreement of the spending of the targeted dollars within the school is completed at this level.
