How does the Confraternitys leadership work? What is it composed of?
The officers listed in the Rule and Constitutions of the Confraternity of Penitents refer primarily to those in local Chapters and Circles. The government of the entire Confraternity of Penitents consists of a Minister General (president), Ministerial Assistant (vice president), Messenger (secretary), and Treasurer. These are to be life pledged members, whenever possible. Advisors to the Minister General and Regional Ministers complete the leadership structure. Decisions of Confraternity leadership are overseen by the Visitor (a priest) who is ultimately subject to the Bishop of the Diocese of Providence. Spiritual advisors also advise the leadership. Why is your president called a “minister”? The term sounds like a clergyman. The term “Minister” is used in the Rule of 1221. It means a person who “ministers” to the others.
