How does the central black hole eat matter?
Every so often, some nearby matter falls inside: perhaps its trajectory leads it inside the event horizon. As it falls, because the gravitational field of the hole is so large, a huge amount of gravitational energy is converted to heat: the heated matter emits thermal x-rays. (Note that the swallowed matter doesn’t emit anything once it’s past the event horizon!).
